HD 5870 availability will be limited at rAge 2009

September 23 marked the international release of ATI’s latest graphics architecture, discussed here. It also marked the start of supply issues, as various news sites around the world reported on the low levels of availability of the card, predicted to last through to the end of September.

Usually, this would suggest that South Africa would only be receiving these cards in October. Fortunately, however, various sources have confirmed that there will be extremely limited numbers – less than 30, countrywide - of these cards available from next week, which means that it should be possible to get a card at the rAge expo, if you’re quick.

The brands that have confirmed they will have stock include Asus, EVGA and Sapphire. MSI and Corex have stated that they will not have cards available for the rAge weekend, but plan to have a significant number of cards available for retail the week after rAge. At this stage, there is no word on XFX HD 5870 availability in South Africa.

The suggested retail price for the HD 5870 is R3 999, although it remains to be seen whether or not these early cards will stick to that price. For those interested in the lower end HD 5850, it is forecast that the cards will launch internationally early next week. Consequently, barring supply issues, it should be possible to obtain these cards locally in the second half of October. AMD’s official local RRP for the card is R2 699, although as with the HD 5870, local etailers are listing the card for far more than this.

In other rAge-related hardware news, MSI has confirmed the local launch of their P55 chipset range of motherboards will occur at rAge. The P55 chipset is based around Intel’s newest range of processors, the Core i5 and uses dual-channel DDR3. The P55 chipset and chips are expected to form the link between Intel’s extremely expensive Core i7 range and their still-to-be-released entry-level Core i3 range. MSI has confirmed that three of their P55 motherboards will be available at rAge – the high-end P55-GD80, the mid-range P55-GD65, and the low-level P55-GD45.
