iGame is hosting a local server for the HON beta, free beta keys available through MyGaming

As a keen supporter of local gaming , iGame, in co-operation with S2 Games will start testing a local Heroes of Newerth server infrastructure this week.

iGame is providing a dedicated test network and the necessary hardware to test the title’s local appeal and ensure that South Africa is one of the first countries to receive a master server.

Dedicated to providing high quality gaming servers to the SA community, iGame aims to ensure that the server’s performance will live up to the same high standards as its other gaming servers.

Recognizing the potential of the title and understanding the community it is aimed at is important.  As such, iGame will be working with certain key local gaming communities to complete the testing of the new service.

MyGaming has run out of beta keys, but iGame is still giving them away here.

Once players have received a valid beta key they need to create an account and download the game client which requires 240MB of international bandwidth. Once the game is installed and an account has been created players will be able to take part in the beta until it ends.

The iGame beta server should go live in the next two days, at which time players will be able to choose to play on iGame SA from the drop down server menu. Locally hosted games will use local bandwidth and will have lower latencies than the international servers. In the meantime players will be able to play on the international servers. MyGaming will update as soon as iGame’s local server is up and running.

For the beta, players will still need to go through an international login server to get into the game, but iGame is working towards getting a dedicated and fully localized authorization server which would enable players to play using local-only bandwidth packages.

“We look forward to working with S2 Games to ensure that Heroes of Newerth is localized successfully and is available to the local gaming community as part of the iGame Portal” said iGame representative Johnathan Smit.

About Heroes of Newerth

Heroes of Newerth is a fully developed game based on the massively popular Warcraft 3 mod – Defense of the Ancients (DOTA). The developers at S2 Games were big fans of DOTA, but felt that the game was being held back by the aging Warcraft 3 engine. They therefore set out to create something that uses the same gameplay mechanic as DOTA, but with better visuals, a slicker interface etc.

Update

The local server is still in its final stages of readyness. An iGame representative commented "we are preppring the network and should be nearing public beta for SA". In the meantime, players can enjoy the international servers.

Problem is, you'll still need international bandwidth to connect to their main server in order to start a game, or am I wrong?

Thats good news, maybe I should read more carefully next time :)

Any Idea on how long it will take to get a local authentication server? Since until then, besides maybe a slightly better ping (which ATM isn't an issue) the benefit of a local server wont be of great use to local players.

I've been trying my butt off to get a beta key for this. It looks great! If savage 1&2 are anything to go by, this will be an amazing title.
