Blizzard offers a compromise to angry gamers

This past weekend saw Blizzard hosting its annual Blizzcon conference. The event has quickly become one of the biggest annual gaming expos in the world due to the massive popularity of the likes of World of Warcraft, Diablo and Starcraft.

One of the biggest pieces of news to emerge from the event was that Blizzard will be releasing StarCraft II with ‘pseudo-LAN’ functionality. The announcement comes following a massive upset created when the developer announced a few months ago that the game would ship without LAN. The primary reason given for the omission of LAN support was piracy, and Blizzard stated that they want to make sure that the only way to play StarCraft II will be through the new Battle.net which will be released alongside the game.

The announcement created such a backlash from fans of the series that a petition was created. The petition  is currently sitting on 121 362 signatures.

Battlenet.net  developer Greg Canessa announced at the conference that Blizzard is “working on solutions with regard to things we can do to maintain connectivity to Battle.net in some way, but also provide a great quality connection between players".

Shacknews asked Canessa if Blizzard would introduce LAN functionality with the requirement that the PC is still connected to the internet and is able to authenticate the game with Battle.net.

"Something like that," he replied. "Maintaining a connection with Battle.net, I don't know if it's once or periodically, but then also having a peer-to-peer connection between players to facilitate a very low-ping, high-bandwidth connection ... those are the things that we're working on," responded Canessa.

While the developer is at least attempting to address the LAN issue, players will still be required to be connected to the internet in order to LAN, which may not be a good enough compromise to win back the majority of angry gamers.

I disagree with some points of this article. "The primary reason given for the omission of LAN support was piracy"
This is absolutely not true, it is the general opinion of the community and is only speculation. Blizzard has in no way confirmed this as the reason for not supporting LAN. Please check your facts before posting. On the whole, it's good news for Starcraft Fans :)

Bob Colayco,Blizzard PR:

"We don't currently plan to support LAN play with StarCraft II, as we are building Battle.net to be the ideal destination for multiplayer gaming with StarCraft II and future Blizzard Entertainment games. While this was a difficult decision for us, we felt that moving away from LAN play and directing players to our upgraded Battle.net service was the best option to ensure a quality multiplayer experience with StarCraft II and safeguard against piracy."

Please check your facts before correcting mine. Thanks ;)

My apologies for being so harsh.
From the Blizzcon Battle.net II panel made mention that their concern was not piracy because they accept there will always be piracy, however they did emphasize the "NO Lan" to rather bring the community together and better the overall experience.

Now the issue that this brings to us is the general level of connectivity in South Africa. Now many of us don't have internet at home (fortunately I do) so if we hold a LAN we will be forced to find and share a internet connection which can be a nightmare at times...

Yea, it will also mean all LAN competition will require some sort of active internet connection at all times. I'm not sure how the current events work, but now you will need to pick a location with some sort of internet cable'ing or wireless and then coverage, latency, uptime and all that becomes a nightmare.

There's a reason why we don't see a WoW-LAN "lets sit in the same room and do a 25-man raid" thing.
