Activision not content to sell PC version of MW2 at traditionally low price

Megarom has announced that the PC version of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare 2 will not retail for the previously announced R399, but in accordance with a worldwide increase, it will retail for R499.

The increase comes directly from Activision Blizzard, who has announced that the PC version of Modern Warfare 2 (MW2) will sell for $59.99, and £44.99 respectively.

This news comes less than a week after PC gamers were told that they would have to wait longer for the game, as it will not meet its previously announced November 10 release date alongside the console versions. Infinity Ward has still not confirmed a new release date for the PC version, but the game is now expected to release on November 24.

The R499 retail price will make the game between R100-R150 more expensive than PC gamers are used to paying. Usually, PC games are cheaper than console titles, largely because publishers do not have to pay licensing fees as they do for Xbox 360 and PS3 games. Furthermore, because PC games are so frequently pirated, publishers have been careful not to make them too expensive.

Because most people who buy Modern Warfare 2 will plan to make use of the online multiplayer which requires an authentic copy, Activision does not have to worry about piracy as much as it would with a regular single player title.

The price increase is likely to cause problems for retailers who have been selling the game on pre-order for R400, and it remains to be seen whether such stores will honour their pre-order prices.

While the news will not go down well with local PC gamers, it has been said that the infinite multiplayer playability on such a game is likely to make the high price worthwhile, at least more so than on regular single player titles.

The Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of the game will retain their previously announced price tag of R699.

Great, Eskom hikes up their prices again. We were getting ripped off by Telkom on a daily basis. Cost of living is through the roof. We are in the middle of a recession. Now the last bastion of what keeps us as gamers sane gets exploited. I mean come on, R499 is just asinine. It’s just sad to see how greedy Activision Blizzard has become. And to think … they don’t think this title will be pirated... Ha ha.. At an extra R100 – 150 more, a lot of SA gamers are going to look elsewhere.
I’m sorry to say this. But hiking a price on a game just because it’s going to be in demand come launch day is bollocks.

First they delay the game and now they increase the price, i will not be surprised if people crack this game all the way up in Activision Blizzard arse!

Really R500 for a game, i hope ill get a few days playtime out of the single player else ill be very disappointed.

Obtain your "Single Player" version of the game and then buy the "Multi player" version when the price comes down IMO. That's what I'll be doing

Ya know, first they make us wait as to prevent the game from being copied etc... now they push the price up!!!
I ask you, how many peeps out there are now inspired to get a cracked version in hand instead of forking out R500-00, thye might have considered buying it at the lower price.

None the less, I want to be able to play online and will buy it for myself, but @ R500-00 it better be without bugs and problems off the shelve and not like COD 5...
