Rumor: Playstation Network may introduce game rentals and music
If these two rumors are to be believed then these services will add significant enhancements to the PSN’s (Playstation Netword) functionality.
Game rental downloads
This first rumor stemmed from a survey that Sony sent out to all PSN users last week. The survey questions PSP users, but may be indicative of the direction Sony is looking to take PSN in.
The questions in the survey focus around the possibility of a game rental service. This would theoretically allow PSP owners to download games over PSN and play them on a rental basis, similar to how we rent videos.
The survey includes detailed hypothetical rental plans, whereby users can enter their preferences in terms of monthly frees and usage.
At this point, the rumor is confined to the PSP, but obviously if the service takes off then Sony will consider applying the model to the PS3. Bandwidth limitations may be a restraining factor to South Africans for the time being, however, with the international bandwidth situation looking to improve over the next few months with Seacom arriving, it may not be too long before such a service is viable locally.
PSN music downloads
This rumor was started when Cnet noticed that Sony had been in discussions with big record labels over possibly providing music for the Playstation Network.
At this point the talks are preliminary and it remains to be seen if PSN will include music in its repertoire of downloadable content.
If it does, then the PSP will effectively have its value proposition greatly enhanced as it will add “portable music player” to its list of functions.
Time will tell if these two rumors hold any water, but if they do then the upcoming PSP GO! will have a lot going for itself.
