The mega super ultra happy ending, step by step

Warning, achtung, and whatever the Turian equivalent is (although Garrus’s irreproachable American accent suggests it’s probably something like “warning”). THIS ARTICLE CONTAINS LOADS OF SPOILERS ABOUT THE END OF MASS EFFECT 2*. Obviously. Stop reading here if you didn’t already know that Miranda turns out to be a guy.

Now, Mass Effect 2 can finish up in all sorts of ways, and most of them are bad.  For pathological completionists (or “Gamerscore whores”, in the vernacular), getting that “No one left behind” achievement is important business, and it’s harder than it looks. In the interests of promoting pathological completionism and important business, therefore, I’ve put together this compact, scientifically-proven, easy-to-use reference guide to saving everyone on your team, getting the mega super ultra happy ending, winning the universe, and adding 75 to your Gamerscore.

Starting off then, you must have the following Normandy ship upgrades:

1.    Thanix Cannon (available after recruiting Garrus)
2.    Multicore Shielding (available after recruiting Tali)
3.    Heavy Ship Armour (available after asking Jacob about upgrades)

Without these upgrades installed, you’ll lose three team members as soon as you jump through the Omega 4 Relay. Nobody likes a cheap bastard, and really, they’re going to die out of spite more than anything else.

Next, your team members must be loyal to you, and you should have most (preferably all) of their individual upgrades. This involves completing each team member’s special mission, but it’s also where things become a bit problematic. Unless you have an exemplary Renegade or Paragon score, you’re always going to end up with one each of the pairs Jack / Miranda and Tali / Legion (that’s either Jack or Miranda, and either Tali and Legion) not loyal to you. Don’t panic, this is okay. It’s also possible that Thane isn’t loyal because you’re crap at spotting targets or negotiating with stupid kids. Panic, this isn’t okay. You do keep saved games at the beginning of every single mission, don’t you? Of course you do. Go back to that, and don’t muck it up this time. Alternately, try and get him through the finale alive, and then post some defamatory post in the comments section about my questionable journalistic ethics and casual dissemination of outrageous lies. I’ll ignore you, of course, but I’ll slyly update the text in this article to make it look like I was right all along.

In the meantime, then, as long as everyone else, and one each of Jack / Miranda and Tali / Legion is loyal, you’re set to go. You can check your team members’ allegiance statuses (normal or loyal) on your private terminal.

HIT THE OMEGA FOUR RELAY (RELAY, RELAY, RELAY)

Once you’re done breaking about 50 million buckazoids’ worth of spaceship, you’ll be ready for the part that most people bugger up. It kinda looks like a multiple choice exam, but – like a proper multiple choice exam, actually - there’s absolutely nothing arbitrary about it. There’s probably a bit of wiggle space here, but the following options will 100% guarantee everything working out.

1.    Send either Tali or Legion (whoever is loyal to you) through the vents. When you get to play this section, keep a close eyeball on that team member’s status bar on the lower right of the HUD. If you take too long here to help them out, this teamie can still get shot in the face, regardless of how much they love you and want to be with you.

2.    Garrus leads the second team (both times).

3.    Send Grunt or Mordin back with the rescued crew.

4.    Samara (or Morinth, if you’re an evil perve) does the biotic bubble stuff.

5.    This particular option is also the most likely to have multiple successful combinations, assuming everyone with you is loyal. Jack or Miranda (whoever is loyal) and Thane make good company.

Technical note: It seems it’s possible for Mordin to die during the last cutscene, despite doing everything correctly. This is almost definitely a bug of some sort, although it might happen as a result of Garrus not being in the second team. But fortunately, because you’re following this really totally brilliant, amazing guide, Garrus will be in the second team. If this happens anyway, simply try reloading the last checkpoint, and playing it over again.

To be honest, I actually finished Mass Effect 2 last weekend and on my first playthrough I managed to get this achievment without reloading once... In fact at the end of the game I still sat wondering why they didn't kill off anybody this time around.

I had all the upgrades as you mentioned, but my team choices were a little different and still worked.

1. Tali went into the vents
2. I had Garrus as my team leader both times
3. I sent Legion back with the rescued crew
4. I had Jack form the biotic barrier
5. My 2 team members with me were always Thane/Miranda

I guess I was just lucky with my choices that I was able to finish first time with no deaths

It seems a lot of people don't think. There are very obvious correct choices for each task. For example, it's clear that the person sent through the vents should be a tech specialist - but for some reason, some people think it should be someone else. I've read loads of "OMG JACOB/GARRUS/MORDIN/GRUNT DIED IN THE VENTS ONOES WHAT DID I DO WRONG???!!" complaints on forums. Facepalm.

Curiously, it appears that another group of people have taken the whole "suicide mission" thing at face value, and simply assume that it's inevitable that team members are going to die. They don't realise it's possible to save everyone.

Well actually, that's exactly what I thought before finishing the game.

Every time I was faced with a choice, for instance when I was told to send someone back with the reinforcements I thought to myself "Okay, this is the person that is gonna die, so I'll pick someone I don't really like."

However, when it came time to choose the team leader for team 2 the reason why I chose Garrus was deliberately because, if you'd been paying attention, you'd know he had led a team of mercs and got them all killed, so I figured I'd choose him doubting he'd make the same mistake again.

It was nice when I managed to save everyone cause it gives you that warm fuzzy feeling of 'Mission Accomplished' and you can go home knowing you're the man/woman :)

I actually lost Miranda (not loyal) the first time around, which is what originally prompted me to look into the mechanisms at play. She died quite randomly, having been left behind to guard the door behind my back. At the time, I'd taken Garrus along with me to the finale. Interestingly, swapping him out for Thane and leaving Garrus behind with the others saved Miranda. I'm assuming this is because he's a good leader.

Amazing game. :)

Just a small addition your guide is that the team leaders can be either Jacob or Garrus, Biotics can be Samara or Jack and ANYONE other than Jack can take the rescued crew back. You also need to beat the end boss AS QUICKLY as possible (I used the CAIN to unleash almost instant death whoopass on the bugger) to ensure no one dies at the last minute.

I didn't manage to save therapist girl due to doing some side quests before the last mission.....buuut thankfully that doesn't stop you from getting the happy "No one left behind" ending.

Yes, and as far as I'm aware, a loyal Miranda can be appointed second team leader too. Also, it's possible to send the rescued crew back without an escort, and without incurring an endgame penalty for it.

For the sake of simplicity, however, I've named only one or two candidates each time. I know for absolute sure that the guide I've given here will work. :)

I didn't even look anything up landed ALL the right choices. (Legion/Vents, Garrus/Both times, Jack/biotic field, and Grunt/Escort. I bull that Mordin dies at the end just cause he's a girl. I a game where ALL your decisions mean something the ONE F***ing thing that I DON'T have control over screws me.... that's B.S.

I also had things a bit differently, but as you stated there are quite a few team choices that works. I had:
Tali-Vents
Miranda(loyal)-Led teams
Samara-Biotic shield
I didnt send anyone back with the civvies so they died (meh), but there were no penalty because of this.
I had Miranda and Garrus with me for end battle.
Only Jack wasn't loyal (well, at first she was, but after the fight with Miranda, she wasn't anymore - i still got her ability)
PS. i must say though, Thane and Garrus is an AWESOME combination to fight Collectors, makes things real easy with their combined abilities (but depends on your own class as well).
I only found out after i finished the game that a lot of peeps can die, so it was quite interesting...

So wait, you guys are saying that if you do the suicide mission early enough, you can save more of the ship's crew? This game is insane with all its options!

I got Chakwas in the end, but it would be great to save the 'Scotty' dude - he's a hoot.

I did Tali as the Paramour, hoping to see her face, I really hope they reveal what the Quarians look like in ME3...

I really want to have all team mates alive in the end, anyone else feel a massive Quarian vs Geth plot coming up??

Just finished the game last night and I ended up going with the same choices you mentioned here (before reading this article), but they were kind of obvious really. I had an entirely loyal team, which made things easier I suppose, but I didn't really have to think about who to send where and I came out with everyone still alive. Both Kelly and Chakwas survived too, which is cool.

It is a brilliant game though and I am so definitely gonna play through it again...
