Woolworths enters gaming market offering gift vouchers with gaming consoles

Recently the nation-wide upmarket food and clothing retailer, Woolworths, branched into selling games and consoles.

Abdul Osman, Woolworths digital product buying manager, speaks about the retailer’s plans for the gaming market in SA.

Could you briefly explain why and when Woolworths decided that they wanted to enter the gaming market?

Firstly, there was a request from customers based on research conducted earlier this year. Secondly, gaming has clearly become a popular activity with a wide appeal to all age groups.

What exactly will Woolworths be selling in their gaming department?

Woolworths will be selling popular new console formats; Wii, DS Lite PS2, PS3, PSP and XBOX 360. The focus will be on the casual gamer.

How many Woolworths stores are currently selling consoles and games, and which ones?

The products will be available in 12 stores sell gaming products. V&A, Tyger Valley, Canal Walk,  Walmer , Gateway, East Rand Mall , Eastgate , Sandton, Fourways, Melrose Arch, Menlyn and Brooklyn.

Being a large retail chain, Woolworths can potentially make a significant impact on the market by reaching a mainstream audience that other chains do not have access to. Is this the plan?

We strive to make gaming conveniently accessible to gaming enthusiasts; while they are enjoying their normal shop at Woolies.

Will Woolworths also be looking to go after the more “core” gaming market and compete with retailers such as Kalahari.net and BTGames?

Our focus is on all gaming enthusiasts.

Can you give me your prices on the following?

Xbox 360 Elite –  R3299 plus a FREE R200 gift card if the product is purchased with a Woolworths Financial Services credit product such as an in store card or Woolworths VISA card.

PS3 Slim line Model 120 GB – R3799 plus a FREE R200 gift card if the product is purchased with a Woolworths Financial Services credit product such as an in store card or Woolworths VISA card.

PS3 Slim line Model 250Gb + Plus 2 Games( Motostorm 2 and Resistance Fall of Man 2)(Available Mid October 2009) – R4499 plus a FREE R200 gift card if the product is purchased with a Woolworths Financial Services credit product such as an in store card or Woolworths VISA card.

Nintendo Wii – R2499 plus a FREE R200 gift card if the product is purchased with a Woolworths Financial Services credit product such as an in store card or Woolworths VISA card.

Any closing comments you would like to make with regards to Woolworths’ role in the South African gaming market?

We strive to make gaming conveniently accessible to gaming enthusiasts; while they are enjoying their normal shopping at Woolies.

Lastly, are you a gamer? If so, what are your favourite platforms and games?

Yes, Wii for fun with my Family, PS3 for more action games and watching Blu-Ray movies.

What would come highly appreciated; honestly, is if Woolworths got a grip on the PS3 service market. Basically making any repairs related to the PS3 (i guess and other console platforms) a painless breeze. I know of 1000's of people who would thoroughly appreciate something like this.

This is not bad, but not great. The prices are the same as at my other local retailers, Incredible and Hi Fi Corp have the same prices on all of these consoles(But Hi Fi's PS3 bundle comes with Killzone2 and GT5 Prologue). As for the R200 voucher, if I have to put it on account I will be paying more than this in interest anyway? Guess it is pretty much the same thing.
