Woolworths adopts competitive console pricing
Recently the nation-wide upmarket food and clothing retailer, Woolworths, branched into selling games and consoles.
Abdul Osman, Woolworths digital product buying manager, speaks about the retailer’s plans for the gaming market in SA.
Could you briefly explain why and when Woolworths decided that they wanted to enter the gaming market?
Firstly, there was a request from customers based on research conducted earlier this year. Secondly, gaming has clearly become a popular activity with a wide appeal to all age groups.
What exactly will Woolworths be selling in their gaming department?
Woolworths will be selling popular new console formats; Wii, DS Lite PS2, PS3, PSP and XBOX 360. The focus will be on the casual gamer.
How many Woolworths stores are currently selling consoles and games, and which ones?
The products will be available in 12 stores sell gaming products. V&A, Tyger Valley, Canal Walk, Walmer , Gateway, East Rand Mall , Eastgate , Sandton, Fourways, Melrose Arch, Menlyn and Brooklyn.
Being a large retail chain, Woolworths can potentially make a significant impact on the market by reaching a mainstream audience that other chains do not have access to. Is this the plan?

Will Woolworths also be looking to go after the more “core” gaming market and compete with retailers such as Kalahari.net and BTGames?
