Battlefield: Bad Company 2 PC competitive future in question?
Gaming discussionsGaming discussions
Ever since Activision announced that Modern Warfare 2 would not be getting dedicated server support, there has been significant portion of players that have moved their attention to EA’s upcoming multiplayer shooter Battlefield: Bad Company 2.
The publisher has now caused an upset by announcing that the PC version of Bad Company 2 will not be getting modding tools, and furthermore that it will not distribute dedicated server software to the public.
“There are many factors for why we have decided this with the biggest factor being security & integrity of our game & Dedicated Servers." Said EA.
The dedicated server point is really a non issue as companies like iGame will simply rent the servers from EA, so we should have tradition dedicated server based gameplay in SA.
Serious competitive players are worried however that the lack of modding tools will make for an unflexable game that may turn out to not be well suited to competitive gameplay.
The lack of modding tools means that it will not be possible to play custom maps, or custom made gameplay types like the popular “Promod” which is the staple gameplay mod used in competitive Call of Duty 4 in SA. Promod makes tweaks to the original game’s play dynamics which make for what gamers consider to be a game that is optimized for high level competitive gameplay.
The optimistic view is that EA Battlefield games are meant to be played the in their original form, with community modifications being unnecessary. Whether or not this will be the case with Bad Company 2 remains to be seen, and it depends on whether EA DICE can deliver, or at least work towards patching a game to be something that is suited to gameplay at all levels.
