Original RTS classic now for sale digitally

In terms of 90’s RTS gaming, Total Annihilation was the cool kid sitting at the back of the class.

Un-phased by the inordinate amount of attention given to the cool kids (StarCraft) or the jocks (Warcraft, Command & Conquer, Age of Empires), it calmly chose its own path, and was praised for its uniqueness and quirky unit design. Sure it did not enjoy the massive fan base of the aforementioned behemoths, but the fans it did have were among the most dedicated around.

Alright, so it’s not the best analogy ever, but I think I deserve a few points for trying.

In reality, Total Annihilation was considered by many dedicated RTS fans to be one of the most tactically engaging and progressive games in its genre. Memorable experimental units, and awesome fixed camera 3D rendering made it a favourite for many, and fortunately, its legacy lives on in the form of Supreme Commander and its upcoming sequel.

For purists however, the new iterations of the classic RTS will never match the heights achieved by the original. Fortunately for them, or at least those that no longer have their Total Annihilation disks - raises hand - the game along with its first expansion pack “Core Contingency” is now available for just $10 (R75) over on Impulse.

And because the game is over 10 years old, it’s relatively small requiring just 887MB of international bandwidth to download.
